The Dragon Returns to the Void

Chapter X
The Dragon Returns to the Void
As the Mandala of the Black Dragon Gate completes its unfolding, the practitioner may sense that something remains to be resolved. The Dragon has emerged from the Ground, the Eye of Prajñā has revealed the luminous nature of reality, the rainbow wheels have displayed the play of wisdom, the Mandala has resonated through sound, and the Bodhi-Child has entered the world as living expression. Even transmission itself has been revealed as the shared recognition of the Unborn within the field of existence. Yet if all of these dimensions are allowed to stand as final truths, a subtle structure remains. The Mandala itself risks becoming an object of attachment, a refined conceptual framework that replaces older patterns of understanding.

Transmission Beyond Form

Chapter IX
Transmission Beyond Form
As the Mandala of the Black Dragon Gate unfolds through the stages of recognition and expression, a question naturally arises within the practitioner’s mind. If the nature of reality is the Unborn, and if this nature has been directly recognized through the Eye of Prajñā, what then is the meaning of transmission? How is this realization communicated, confirmed, or shared between beings?
The Bodhi-Child

Chapter VIII
The Bodhi-Child
Having entered the Black Dragon Gate and recognized the luminous clarity of the Eye of Prajñā, the practitioner may at first assume that the journey has reached its conclusion. The Ground has been glimpsed, the structures of the storehouse consciousness have begun to dissolve, and the Mandala has revealed itself as a radiant display of wisdom. Yet within the unfolding of the teaching, this recognition marks not an end but a beginning. For the Mandala does not remain a silent revelation of truth; it becomes a living movement within the world.

Meditation on the Dragon Eye

Chapter VII
Meditation on the Dragon Eye
Having explored the symbolism of the Black Dragon Gate through the language of the Ground, the storehouse consciousness, the Eye of Prajñā, and the radiant display of wisdom, the practitioner now arrives at a crucial threshold. The Mandala must no longer be approached merely as an object of contemplation or philosophical reflection. It must be entered. The image that has thus far functioned as a teaching device becomes a living gateway, and the practitioner’s own experience becomes the field in which the Mandala reveals its true meaning.

The Sound of the Void

Chapter VI
The Sound of the Void
Having entered the luminous field of the Mandala and witnessed the rainbow wheels of awakened wisdom, the practitioner may begin to notice that the Mandala is not a silent structure. It is not merely a visual symbol suspended within the imagination. Instead, it possesses a subtle dynamism that reveals itself through rhythm, vibration, and resonance. The Mandala does not remain still; it breathes, pulses, and moves. In the contemplative traditions of Asia this movement has often been expressed through the symbolism of sacred sound.

The Wheels of Rainbow Wisdom

Chapter V
The Wheels of Rainbow Wisdom
Having entered the depth of the Dragon and glimpsed the luminous clarity of the Eye of Prajñā, the practitioner now begins to perceive another dimension of the Mandala. Surrounding the Dragon Eye there appears a radiant field of color, light, and movement—an intricate pattern of concentric rings often described as wheels of rainbow luminosity.
The Eye of Prajñā

Chapter IV
The Eye of Prajñā
At the center of the Black Dragon Eye Mandala there appears a symbol that may at first seem deceptively simple: an Eye. Yet this Eye is not merely an artistic motif placed at the heart of the Mandala for visual balance. It represents one of the most subtle and easily misunderstood dimensions of the entire teaching. To understand the meaning of this Eye, we must first address a common assumption that appears across many spiritual traditions: the belief that ultimate reality is a form of universal consciousness observing the world. In many philosophical systems enlightenment is described as the realization that one’s true identity is pure awareness, a cosmic witnessing presence that perceives all phenomena. While such language can capture certain aspects of contemplative experience, it can also introduce a subtle confusion. If ultimate reality is imagined as a universal observer, then the duality between observer and observed remains quietly intact.
The Dragon and the Storehouse Consciousness

Chapter III
The Dragon and the Storehouse Consciousness
As the practitioner moves further into the Mandala of the Black Dragon Gate, a new dimension of the teaching gradually comes into view. In the previous chapter we explored the Dragon as a symbol of the primordial Ground, the unfathomable depth from which all phenomena arise. Yet the emergence of the cosmos from this Ground does not occur in a simple or linear fashion. Between the silent depth of the Ground and the vivid diversity of the world lies a subtle domain in which the seeds of experience are stored, matured, and brought into manifestation. Within the philosophical tradition of Yogācāra, this domain is described as the ālaya-vijñāna, often translated as the storehouse consciousness. The ālaya-vijñāna is not the ordinary mind that thinks, judges, and analyzes. Rather, it functions as the underlying repository in which the karmic tendencies of countless experiences accumulate. Each perception, intention, and action leaves behind a subtle trace, a seed that rests within this storehouse until the conditions for its expression arise.

The Dragon and the Ground

Chapter II
The Dragon and the Ground
The appearance of the Dragon within the Mandala does not arise from mythology alone. It is not merely a decorative symbol borrowed from the rich iconography of Asian spiritual traditions. Rather, the Dragon serves as a profound metaphor for something that lies at the very heart of contemplative realization: the Ground of reality itself.

Dedication
This series is dedicated to the sincere practitioner Scott (Om Vajrapani Hum), whose unwavering devotion to meditation and Dharma sharing has resulted in hundreds of contemplative offerings for the benefit of all beings. Over many years of practice, his work has revealed something essential about the Way of the Unborn: realization does not end in silence but flowers as compassionate activity within the world. Through sound, image, rhythm, and contemplative visualization, his meditative creations invite practitioners to enter the living field of the Dharma. His recent meditation centered upon the Black Dragon Eye Mandala serves as a powerful example of how the symbolic language of awakening can become a direct gateway into contemplative recognition. May this series stand as a gesture of gratitude for his dedication and as a support for all who seek to realize the Unborn Mind.
