The Eye of Prajñā

At the center of the Black Dragon Eye Mandala there appears a symbol that may at first seem deceptively simple: an Eye. Yet this Eye is not merely an artistic motif placed at the heart of the Mandala for visual balance. It represents one of the most subtle and easily misunderstood dimensions of the entire teaching. To understand the meaning of this Eye, we must first address a common assumption that appears across many spiritual traditions: the belief that ultimate reality is a form of universal consciousness observing the world. In many philosophical systems enlightenment is described as the realization that one’s true identity is pure awareness, a cosmic witnessing presence that perceives all phenomena. While such language can capture certain aspects of contemplative experience, it can also introduce a subtle confusion.
