This is such a trivial question I am reluctant to ask, but in describing the seven precious substances is there any indication what substance it is being characterized as the yellow-green base? I’m just curious.
By the way, RigpaWiki has it that the seven “noble riches of the Arya” are faith, discipline, generosity, learning, dignity, propriety, and wisdom. I am not trying to read into this or suggest meanings not present in the sutra but thought it was interesting enough to mention.
Nothing is to too trivial…
Powers has listed it as “spug (a greenish-yellow gem according to W)”…must have to do with a Tibetan element since his translation was with the Tibetan. Interestingly enough, the Lotus Sutra has these seven listed as “gold, silver, lapis-lazuli, seashell, agate, pearl, and carnelian.”
The Sutra is referring here to those seven substances, not the seven “noble riches of the Arya”; Cleary also has them listed as “seven precious substances”, but thank-you for including them here as an honorable mention.
Very interesting, thanks.
