  1. Tozen says:

“unaware of the karmic misfortunes that lie in store for the un-awakened mind.”

Unaware of the KARMIC FORTUNES that lie in store for the un-awakened mind.

Failing to discover this variant (and use) for one´s own spiritual benefit is a deeper ignorance than the first statement.

Misfortune from the first statement can bring wisdom because misfortune is basically the act of ERROR and its effects experienced by the un-awakened. All sentients have the inbuilt ability to learn from their errors, though most have to repeat them many, many times before they change their act of handling the presented conditions.

The bypass of this karmically auspicious opportunity that leaves room and time for the second statement TO NOT have its matured time, place and effect upon the un-awakened, happens primarily by the greatest sin of all: FEAR.

Anger never gives rise to fear. It is always fear (of loss) that gives rise to anger (shallow or deep) self-doubt, hesitance to act when needed, desire to gain or regain the lost or non-owned, and the many other poisons of the mind.

Here, anger combined and co-dependant with its original source, fear, gives rise to acts of ignorance produced by a volatile wave creation of the imageless Mind substance, which in turn builds patterns of specific interference.
These patterns, once risen, are irrevocably conditioned to come back and catch its creator, like a fishnet, affecting it´s conditioned settlement in a body, kin, thing or place, at a time impossible to calculate due to the non-linear spatiotemporality of Karma.

One of the perfect spiritual qualities describing the Buddhas is FEARLESSNESS. When Mara attacked Buddha Gothama under the Sala tree, fear was his prime weapon, and he failed because the perfectly awakened Mind saw through and beyond this illusory wave conjured up by the Evil One.

What is perfectly enlightened to its true nature has a perfectly fearless Mind and spiritual Body that in accordance with its perfect imaglessness holds on to no-thing because it is free from outflows due to its flawless alignment with the pure Mind essence, and not as the un-awakened, the waves of said essence.

No evil can affect, or face, such a pure Mind of the sheer imageless light all Buddhas and bodhisattvas denote as noble wisdom.

The un-awakened do not know the Nirvana of perfect Imagelessness, or for that matter perfect fearlessness that grants the clarity of Mind that allows no illusion of ignorance to become even the smallest seed of a future maturation and cause of error, and consequently, in their ignorance, they FEAR the UNKNOWN which results in endless positive and negative errors and the effect of these errors – KARMA.
