The Abyss

Pamela and Evan found themselves standing before a deep pit, blocking their path. As they peered down into the depths of the pit, their eyes widened in shock and horror. A vast sea of writhing, squirming bodies filled the space below, each one desperately clawing and scrabbling at the walls in a frenzied attempt to escape.

At first, they couldn’t quite make out what they were seeing. The creatures below were unlike anything they had ever encountered before – strange, twisted forms that seemed to blur the line between animal and human. Some had multiple limbs, others had tentacles or wings or tails. Some were covered in fur or scales or feathers, while others were slick and slimy to the touch.

But despite their differences, all of the creatures shared one thing in common: a fierce determination to climb their way out of the pit and back into the world above.

As they watched, transfixed, the creatures began to surge forward in a massive wave, their bodies pressing against each other in a desperate bid for freedom. The noise was deafening – a cacophony of grunts and groans and snarls and screams that echoed off the walls of the pit and reverberated through the air.

As they peered into its depths and the disordered confusion, they soon discerned that it was all a metaphor for something much deeper and profound. They believed that this pit represented the realization that ignorance, known as avidya in influential circles, had roots that ran far beneath the surface. It was as if there existed an unconscious repository within it, filled with tainted seeds.

This repository, they discerned, was called the Alaya-vijnana or “storehouse consciousness.” It held within it all the karmic sensate data that had accumulated since time immemorial. Like the calm surface of the ocean, the Alaya-vijnana remained undisturbed in itself. However, when influenced by the waves of the Vijnanas, the elements of consciousness, it set samsara, the cycle of birth and death, into motion.

As they gazed into its abyss, they couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe and trepidation. In that moment, Pamela and Evan realized that this pit was not just a physical entity, but a metaphor for their own personal journey. It represented the never-ending quest for self-discovery, a journey that would take them deep into the recesses of their own consciousness. They understood that this was not a path for the faint-hearted, but one that required courage, determination, and an unwavering commitment to uncovering the truth.

They knew that this journey would not be easy. It would demand that they confront their deepest fears, their darkest secrets, and their most hidden desires. It would force them to question their beliefs, challenge their assumptions, and confront the limitations of their own ignorance. But they were willing to embark on this path, for they understood that only by delving into the depths of their own being could they hope to attain the enlightened state of Buddhahood.

Before they ventured onward, though, Evan and Pamela could not but feel deep sympathy and compassion for the squirming inhabitants of the abyss. As “Light Bringers”, Bodhisattvas, Evan and Pamela were no strangers to the suffering of others. They knew that it was their duty to help alleviate the pain and misery of those around them, no matter how great the challenge.

And so, before they ventured onward, Evan and Pamela decided to take a moment to help the inhabitants of the abyss. They closed their eyes and focused their minds, calling upon the power of the Unborn Light to heal and soothe the suffering creatures below.

With a great burst of energy, they generated waves of healing light that flowed down into the abyss, bathing the creatures in a warm and comforting glow. For a brief moment, the squirming inhabitants were able to find some relief from their pain and suffering.

As the sun began to set on the horizon, casting a warm golden glow over the weary travelers, they turned to face the path that lay ahead. The air was filled with a sense of accomplishment, a deep-rooted satisfaction that emanated from within their souls. They had done what they could, gone above and beyond to lend a helping hand to those in need.

Their ongoing journey continued to be long and arduous, fraught with challenges and obstacles that seemed insurmountable at times. Yet, each time they had persevered, driven by an unwavering determination to make a difference in the lives of others. Their hearts had been touched by the stories of struggle and hardship they had encountered along the way, and they had vowed to do whatever it took to alleviate the suffering they witnessed.

With each passing day, their resolve had grown stronger, their compassion deeper. They had shared their meager provisions with the hungry, offered shelter to the homeless, and provided solace to the broken-hearted. They had listened to the tales of despair and offered words of encouragement, reminding those they encountered that they were not alone in their struggles.

Now, as they stood at this crossroad, their bodies weary and their spirits uplifted, they couldn’t help but feel a profound sense of fulfillment. They had given their all, poured their hearts and souls into this noble mission, and the impact they had made was immeasurable. The smiles they had witnessed, the tears they had wiped away, and the gratitude they had received were etched into their memories, forever reminding them of the power of compassion and selflessness.

As they gazed into the distance, the road stretched out before them, winding its way through lush green fields and towering mountains. It was a path that held countless unknowns, challenges yet to be faced, and lives yet to be touched. But they were not afraid. They had learned that the true reward lay not in the destination, but in the journey itself.

With renewed determination, they took their first steps forward, their hearts filled with hope and their souls brimming with a sense of purpose. They knew that there were still countless souls out there, waiting for a helping hand, a kind word, or a simple act of kindness. And they were ready to continue their mission, to spread love and compassion wherever they went.

As they embarked on this new leg of their journey, they carried with them the memories of those they had helped, the lives they had touched. And they knew that no matter how challenging the road ahead may be, they were made to make a difference.
